What is EMV chip card technology?

Chip-enabled cards are standard bank cards that are embedded with a micro computer chip which stores and protects cardholder data. Chip technology helps increase security, reduce fraud and enable the use of future value-added applications. It is becoming the global standard for credit card and debit card payments. The chip technology is a result of a coordinated effort by Europay, MasterCard, and VISA, and is therefore, often referred to as an EMV card.

How is EMV chip card technology different than traditional magnetic stripes?

EMV was developed to combat fraud and protect sensitive data. Data is more secure on a chip-enabled card than on a magnetic stripe card. Data from a traditional magnetic stripe card can be easily copied (skimmed), enabling criminals to reproduce counterfeit cards. Dynamic values existing within the chip card allow it to be verified at the point-of-sale, ensuring authenticity.
